Using Older Paterson Tanks with AGO
If your film came out undeveloped or unevenly developed when using your own Paterson tank with the AGO Film Processor, an older central column design is the most common cause. This article explains how to identify the issue and walks you through the available solutions.
Step 1: Check Your Paterson Tank
Paterson tanks come in two generations. Older models have a central column design that blocks the flow of chemistry during horizontal rotational agitation, which is how the AGO operates. This can prevent the developer from reaching parts of the film, leaving sections undeveloped.
Later Paterson models have a revised central column that works correctly with the AGO. Watch the video below to see exactly how to tell the difference between the old and new column designs:
Step 2: Fix It with the AGO Adapter
If your tank has the older central column, there is no need to buy a new tank. Every AGO Film Processor kit ships with an adapter designed specifically for this situation. The adapter fits over the old central column and allows chemistry to flow correctly during horizontal agitation.
If you have lost your adapter or need additional pieces, there are two ways to get one:
Option 1 3D print it yourself
Download the free 3D printing file from the Support section of the Vintage Visual website and print the adapter at home or through a local print service.
Option 2 Order the modified funnel and rear stand kit
Purchase the complete modified funnel and rear stand kit, which includes 3 adapter pieces ready to use.
