The Inspiration

We’ve been there—struggling with limited options for developing large-format film and RA-4 prints in a compact darkroom. The Paper5 reel emerged as an answer to these frustrations. It’s compatible with Paterson 5-reel and 8-reel tanks and handles formats up to 8×10 inches, allowing you to develop RA-4 paper, B&W prints, and even large-format film.

But what about 5×7? REEL 5×7 – designed specifically for the 5×7 format, it offers the same chemical efficiency and ease of use, whether you’re developing negatives or prints. Together, these two reels create a workflow that feels intuitive and, dare we say, fun. Fits two 5×7 format films or papers on it.

Why this stands out?

Let’s face it: developing large-format film and prints can be daunting. Trays are messy and take a lot of room, chemicals are expensive so not to be wasted, and consistency can be hard to achieve (but not with AGO). That’s why we focused on creating a solution that minimizes these headaches and works seamlessly with the AGO Film Processor but also in the good old hand agitation way:

•Chemical Efficiency: Both reels are designed to use the smallest possible amount of chemistry without compromising on results while developing in rotary method. You can take full advantage of AGO Film Processor’s capabilities. If you prefer, these reels can also be used with manual agitation but then in vertical agitation method using a tank-full of chemistry.

•Flexibility Across Formats: The Paper5 handles formats up to 8×10 inches, while the REEL 5×7 lets you tackle 5×7 film and prints with ease.

•Compact and Modular: The REEL 5×7 can even slot into the Paper5 reel as an insert, letting you develop multiple 5×7 prints at once.

•Easy Loading: Loading these reels in the dark is surprisingly straightforward. No bending, no stress—just evenly developed negatives and prints every time.

The Real Magic: Combining the Two Reels

Here’s the thing that got us most excited: combining the Paper5 and REEL 5×7 opens up new possibilities. By using the 5×7 reel as an insert, you can divide the Paper5 reel into two sections, letting you develop multiple 5×7 prints at once or smaller formats. It’s a setup that feels almost too efficient, but trust us, it works beautifully.
